科学的研究に関して、突然変異体の遺伝学的解析の結果は1916年に外山や竹崎らによって最初の論文として出版 された。その後もほとんどが日本人科学者、特に、今井・萩原両氏によって精力的に研究され、対立性検定や連関群の調査、連鎖地図の作製等が行われ戦前だけで、150報に及ぶ、英語・邦文・ドイツ語の論文が出版されている。以下のリストは主にImai, Y. (1938) Genetic literature of the Japanese morning glory . によっている。
