South American strains

Colombian Colombia Y026

Copyright 1998-2022 Yoshiaki Yoneda

This is a wild strain from Cesar district of Colombia. The hypocotyls have a reddish tinge, and the cotyledonary veins are also tinged slightly with red. The cotyledons are small and slender. The epidermal hairs extend to the hypocotyl and to the cotyledonary petiole. Because the side lobes are not prominent, the leaf appears long and slender as a whole. The author calls this leaf the side lobe mucronate cordate type or side lobe-minute type. Epidermal hairs are long and grow densely on the stem. Under natural conditions at Shizuoka-city, flower buds are recognized in late October. One or two flowers are generally observed per peduncle, but there can frequently be three or four. The corolla is light blue and the flower tube is white. The flower diameter is 3 to 4 cm and the flower length is ca. 5 cm; hence the flower appears long and slender. The leaf shape of this strain is unusual in the wild and local strains of Ipomoea nil.
